Created circa 1900, this medal-jewel locket by the Comte d'Epinay is composed of 18K gold and diamonds. The medallion locket is designed with a young woman with flowing hair in profile wearing a rose-cut diamond necklace, among fruiting mistletoe branches with rose-cut diamond berries, sliding open to reveal a glazed locket compartment, suspended from a ropetwist chain. Ideal for holding an image of a loved one near the heart, this locket is designed by the artist to express the spirit of youth and vitality.

The Comte d'Epinay (1836-1914) was among the talented engravers who understood the technique of "tour de reduire", the mechanical process by which hand engraving could be reduced to jewel size. He was among the artists called upon by the Parisian houses to satisfy the demand for fashionable medals in the Art Nouveau style featuring "Femme-Fleurs", young women representing archetypes such as dawn, night, or, as here with the mistletoe, passion and vitality.
