Macklowe Gallery is the world's premier dealer of museum-quality 20th century decorative arts, and the largest global home of authenticated Tiffany Lamps. For nearly 50 years, we have been sought by scholars, museum curators and collectors for our specialty in French Art Nouveau furniture and objects, Tiffany Lamps and Tiffany glass, and fine jewelry. Our gallery ensures the authenticity of all of our pieces, which are thoughtfully selected for their artistic value, rarity and historic importance. With more than 6,000 square feet of gallery floor space directly on Park Avenue, we are able to display one of the most important and comprehensive collections in the world.

Over the years we have placed decorative works of art in major public, private and corporate clients’ collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, The Dallas Museum and the Australian National Gallery, among others. In 1995, founders Lloyd and Barbara Macklowe were honored as Collectors of the Year by the Virginia Museum.

Now under the leadership of Benjamin Macklowe, Macklowe Gallery has re-dedicated itself to educating and promoting the next generation of innovative collectors. Ben Macklowe has been recognized in the industry as a thought leader and lectures regularly at Christie's, Sotheby's and Appraisal Industry events. Together with the gallery's team of curatorial experts, Ben and Hillary have authored books on Art Nouveau sculpture and jewelry that have become standards in the field.

Through the Years

Humble Beginnings

Lloyd and Barbara Macklowe marry and begin their life together—with almost nothing to their name, they furnish their first home with secondhand pieces scouted from The New York Times merchandising pages, and an appreciation for the value in old objects is born.

1964

The First Acquisition

After a visit to their first antiques show at Madison Square Garden, Lloyd and Barbara are struck by the beauty of Tiffany Lamps, but floored by their $500 price tags. They purchase their first Tiffany vase, with the dealer allowing them to pay in $5 installments over several weeks.

1965

The Collector's Eye

Their love of collecting grows in earnest, pursuing then-affordable Rookwood Pottery for $3 and $5 per piece. On weekends, they day trip to Connecticut to go antiquing and start selling their finds to dealers in NYC. Using their apartment storage unit as home base, Lloyd and Barbara begin a mail-order business with ads in the back of Hobby Magazine.

1966

Springtime in Paris

At their first antiques show, their pottery collection sells out in the first four hours of a four-day show. Barbara, a jewelry lover, suggests adding one case of jewelry for the next show. They begin going on buying trips to Paris and London to scout the best Art Nouveau, Victorian, and Georgian pieces.

1968

Wheels Down

Pregnant with their second child Benjamin, Lloyd and Barbara decide packing up their VW to go to antiques shows on the weekends is no longer sustainable. At the suggestion of opening a store, Barbara says, “I don’t want to be a shopkeeper’s wife!”

1970

Brick and Mortar

In September, Macklowe Gallery opens in a 420-square-foot space at 82nd and Madison, becoming the first true destination for decorative arts of the Art Nouveau era.

1971

Reintroducing Bugatti

Macklowe Gallery hosts the first exhibition of animalier sculpture by Rembrandt Bugatti in the United States, featuring extraordinarily important work from 1900. His work is introduced to a new market and becomes highly collectible.

1972

The Expansion

The gallery expands, moving to 982 Madison Avenue, next door to Sotheby’s.

1976

"Modernism"

The Macklowes partner with Barry Friedman to expand the gallery into “Modernism,” a destination for 1920s furniture, lighting, and objects. The shared space is created by cutting a hole in the wall between 982 Madison Avenue and the space next door.

1982

A New Home

Jewelry, furniture, and decorative arts are all consolidated under one roof at 667 Madison Avenue—a pioneering move at the time, considering that entire area was office buildings.

1987

The A-List

The gallery begins to attract an A-list clientele, including Barbara Streisand, Faye Dunaway, Rod Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, and a young Steve Jobs.

1990

Passing The Torch

Newly graduated from Tufts University with a degree in French, Lloyd and Barbara’s son, Ben Macklowe—teacher at the time—pitches in at the store when everyone else is home with the flu. Despite trying to do anything but work in the family business, he is smitten when he makes his first sale—an $800 pair of cuff links—and decides to dedicate himself to reviving the gallery’s focus on client development and sales.

1992

Collectors of the Year

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts honors Lloyd and Barbara Macklowe as “Collectors of the Year,” with Barbara delivering a well-received keynote address on the passion of collecting.

1995

A Prestigious Invitation

Macklowe Gallery is invited to exhibit at The Winter Antiques Show, the most prestigious stage in the U.S. This marks the first time a gallery specializing in items post-1900 had ever been extended an invitation.

1997

National Gallery of Art

The National Gallery of Art stages an exhibition on Art Nouveau, featuring a cabinet donated by Macklowe Gallery to The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

2000

Barbara Retires

Having established a thriving jewelry business under Barbara’s expert eye— acquiring and selling important pieces from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Rene Lalique and Marcus & Co.—she officially retires from Macklowe Gallery.

2005

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art makes a strategic acquisition of a Tiffany aquamarine vase , previously from LCTs personal collection, to accompany their landmark exhibition “LCT at Laurelton Hall

2006

Expertise, Personified

An expanded focus on education and expertise brings the gallery new visibility, and re-asserts its position as the foremost authority on Art Nouveau, with Ben lecturing at Christie’s and Sotheby’s, and being quoted as an expert in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

2008

Publishing Prestige

Macklowe Gallery publishes two books, with accompanying exhibitions: “Dynamic Beauty: Sculpture of Art Nouveau” in 2011, and “Nature Transformed: Art Nouveau Horn Jewelry” in 2012.

2011

Signature

Ben Macklowe is named President.

2012

Give me Park Avenue

A new 6,000 square-foot space at 445 Park Avenue gives the gallery unprecedented space to display one of the world’s most important and comprehensive collections of 20th century decorative arts.

2017

Signature

After many years of working in the gallery, Hillary Macklowe is named Creative Director.

2018

LLOYD RETIRES

Nearly 50 years after establishing Macklowe Gallery as the premiere global destination for Art Nouveau, Lloyd Macklowe retires, but doesn’t retire his passion for collecting.

2019

The New Digital Horizon

The relaunch of macklowegallery.com brings extensive education and expertise to a new generation of collectors. The ability to acquire some of the rarest finds from anywhere across the globe makes the gallery a true pioneer in the digital collecting space.
