Moonstone is a variety of feldspar composed of alternating, micro-thin layers of the albite and feldspar. Light reaching these stacked layers of contrasting materials cause light to diffract and scatter through the crystal structure, resulting in the appearance of a milky blue glow in the gem. Sri Lanka is one of the main sources of of fine, transparent moonstone with blue phenomenon.
