Daum Nancy "Avoine et abeilles" Vase

$17,500
This French Art Nouveau Glass Vase by Daum features ruby-toned handles and bees buzzing amongst the variously colored foliage featured on the vessel. The vase utilizes the famous Daum Studio’s technique of blowing clear glass around an inner layer of colored glass, giving a dimensional effect to the artwork. A final added effect would be the frosting of the glass, which makes the negative space of the vessel appear to be colored glass as opposed to a colored underlay.

The techniques used in the paintings on this vessel include using enamel paint in three different forms: transparent, opaque, and polychrome. The added designs, the bees, and the leaves would be freehand painted on the vessel. Layers of glass paste are applied, and then the vessel is submerged in a hydrofluoric acid bath to give the paintings a sleek, raised look.
