Jewelers of the mid 19th century looked backfor inspiration to the work of French 18th century jewelers, who mounted diamonds in silver to spectacular effect. One of their major advances in the setting of diamonds in the 19th century was "a-jouring" - or opening the mountings of diamonds in back, allowing more daylight to enter the stones. The dark patina that silver naturally takes on increases the drama and brilliance of these jewels.
