Clément Massier Byzantine Woman Decorative Ceramic Charger

$17,500

This iridescent, enamel-glazed ceramic charger by Clément Massier, modeled after a design by Alphonse Mucha, depicts a woman's profile in Byzantine dress and jewels. The subtly-colored French Art Nouveau profile on the charger, with a deep oxblood ground, focuses on the celebrated image by Mucha of a Byzantine woman with an ethereal glow, her station in the history of the beautiful, cemented by Massier's otherworldly depiction in this highly delicate enamel work that is perfect to hang anywhere in the home.

The particularity of this ceramic plate is that it combines Clément Massier's talent as a ceramist and Alphonse Mucha's talent as a draftsman. Indeed, the blonde Byzantine profile depicted on the charger was originally designed by Mucha in 1897, as part of his artistic diptych, "Byzantine Heads."
