This exquisite Lucien Gaillard paper clip depicts the Grand Paon de Nuit (Great Night Peacock), the largest moth in Europe. This paper clip would have bound stacks of important documents on the desk of a 20th-century aesthete. The moth was revered as a nocturnal creature of mystery and revelation. Its dramatic eye-spots, echoing the feathers of the peacock, linked it to themes of vision, perception, divinity, and transformation—resonating with Symbolist fascinations: death and rebirth, eroticism, metamorphosis, and the porous boundary between the physical and the dreamlike. Eugene Gaillard, the brother of the celebrated Paris jeweler Lucien Gaillard, originally studied and practiced law before abandoning that practice to begin his study of sculpture, which lead him into the realm of other decorative arts in the Art Nouveau style, and which brought him much acclaim with the ever celebrated 20th century Art Nouveau gallery “L’Art Nouveau Bing.” Gaillard was a multidisciplinary artist, designing furniture, decorative sculpture and textiles to complete rooms and atmospheres in their entirety.
