Donald Claflin for Tiffany & Co. Diamond Ostrich Brooch

$25,000

Designed by Donald Claflin and created circa 1971-1972, this Tiffany & Co. ostrich brooch is composed of 18K gold, platinum, diamonds and emeralds. The beribboned ostrich, with cabochon emerald eyes, and guarding an egg, has a textured body with platinum and diamond plumes. A 1970s bit of whimsy from Tiffany & Co., this friendly wild bird represents Claflin's ever experimental and humorous side.

The early 1970s were among Claflin's most imaginative and productive years. In a short time, he redesigned the Tiffany engagement ring and created the "Crossover" and "Finger Bracelet" rings, which had a flexible shank. In addition to the ostrich, his 1971-1972 menagerie included a coral kingfisher with boat and fishing rod, a double Egyptian falcon brooch, and a family of emerald-eyed diamond ducks engineered to spin around a large aquamarine pond. Claflin's hardware inspired "Ball and Chain" jewelry was popular in these years, while his protegée Sonia Younis' work also began to be featured more prominently.
