In the 1890s women of fashion wore jeweled bangles several to a wrist. The 1894 Sir Fildes portrait of Queen Alexandra, who led jewelry fashion in the late Victorian age, shows the monarch wearing three narrow bracelets. Rubies, then as now, were the rarest of the colored stones.
