Dating as far back as 4 billion years, Zircons, formed of the elements zirconium, silicon and oxygen, are among the oldest gems on earth, crystallizing in magma and metamorphic rocks. They have recently been a focus of scientists studying the earliest geological history of the earth, and vulcanologists study them for data that will help them predict eruptions. Sri Lanka and Myanmar are sources of gem zircon, which are surface mined from river gravels.
