This Marcus & Co. Art Deco AGL no-heat Ceylon sapphire and diamond ring dates from circa 1920. It is set with an oval-cut sapphire weighing 5.90 carats, flanked by French-cut sapphires, and framed by circular-cut diamonds, within an openwork foliate motif platinum mount. Set with an increasingly scarce and desirable natural and untreated gem sapphire, this lovely period ring is a graceful and charming Deco jewel with timeless modernity.

Later traveling to India to purchase natural pearls directly from traders, in this earlier period Marcus & Co. sourced its colored stones of Indian origin from Paris and London, the traditional markets for fine gems. Most of their platinum work in this period was crafted by William Scheer, who also produced jewelry to the design of Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. It was around 1920 that the firm changed its signature from Marcus & Co. and M & Co. to simply MARCUS.
