As described in Bulgari, by Daneila Mascetti and Amanda Triossi, the "Spiga" is one of Bulgari's "modular" jewel collections, inspired by the modernist concept that design can derive from a single "graphic sign, chosen at random." Using these modules, Nicola Bulgari and his team created a series of modernist collections, each reflecting "a well-defined shape, free of unnecessary ornamentation, which can be reproduced in a series and combined to for a variety of homogeneous designs." The Spiga module, named after its inspiration from a stylized ear of wheat, joined the firm's popular Parentesi, Doppio Cuore, Alveare, and Trika collections in the 1990s.
