Gérard Sandoz "Coquille d’Œuf" Eggshell Lacquer Cuff Links

$15,000

These Art Deco double cuff links in silver, lacquer, and "coquille d’œuf" or eggshell lacquer, by Gérard Sandoz, date from the late 1920s. Each double link is designed as a slim silver square inlaid with a geometric lacquer composition in red, black, and coquille d’œuf. With their vibrant color and strong design reminiscent of the abstractions of Cubism, these bold cuff links rise above the medium to convey the innovative power of the 1920s Parisian revolution in visual and decorative arts.

Gérard Sandoz and other French artist-jewelers of the Union des Artistes Modernes were masters of lacquer work, as well as enamel. Lacquer is a difficult technique that is more resilient than enamel, having a greater capacity to give rather than crack when subjected to pressure.
