This stunning gilt and patinated bronze sculpture of American performer Loïe Fuller by Louis Chalon functions as a candelabra. This unexpected lighted aspect is located in the figure’s hands, which grip the flowing fabric while being thrown. It is within the material thrown from Fuller’s hands the candles would rest. Fuller was known and adored for her groundbreaking dance routines that featured costumes as a property.

The dancer became an instant success after her inaugural performance in Paris for Édouard Marchand, the director of the Folies-Bergère. Overnight newspapers began to publish stories on how Fuller became the “priestess of pure fire.”
