René Lalique White Poppy Pendant Brooch
Created circa 1905-1906, this René Lalique pendant brooch is composed of amethyst, molded glass, enamel and 18K gold. The three sided open form centers an octagonal fancy-cut amethyst, framed by meandering opaque and translucent champlevé enamel poppy stems and leaves with molded crystal glass white poppy blossoms and blue enamel accents. A study of the delicate shapes of a single species, juxtaposed with a specimen amethyst, this unusual Lalique pendant brooch contrasts the delicacy of organic life with the striking geometry of gem crystals.

Using exacting technique and experimentation alike, Lalique explored various motifs and forms in his evolving jewelry practice, combining disparate precious and humble materials, and moving on to new themes once an interest had been exhausted. Pendants were among his favorite forms, perhaps due to their versatility and their relative freedom from the vagaries of changes in fashion, necklines and hairstyles.
