Tiffany Studios New York Favrile “Allium” Glass Vase

This stunning Tiffany Studios New York vase is decorated with the silver petals of the allium flower and trailing stems on a bronze ground with blue and red iridescence. Opaque bronze glass vessels were among the products the public least expected, from an American glassmaker. Tiffany thought differently, and such opaque bronze pieces were among the earliest blown objects Tiffany’s glass company produced.

Tiffany’s allium vases were inspired by the cyanotypes of Victorian England. Scientific illustrators would record silhouettes by placing specimens on coated paper, and exposing it to sunlight. Tiffany produced cyanotypes from 1890-1920 as studies for his paintings, glass and design work. The abstract, slightly blurred shapes created by the process are wondrously reproduced in glass much to the delight of the viewer.
