Tiffany Studios New York "Spider" Table Lamp

This Tiffany Studios New York “Spider” table lamp features a streaky orange-to-amber leaded-glass shade set atop a patinated bronze “Inverted Mushroom” base based on the gills of the underside of a mushroom. A sculptural bronze spider crowns the shade, its six elongated legs radiating downward to divide the web into geometric panels. Within each panel, striated glass tiles evoke the fine, shimmering threads of a spider’s web, while a funnel-shaped glass element emerges beneath the finial. The strongly raised bronze veins give the lamp an almost Gothic character, contrasting with the warm, nearly monochromatic glass. Along the lower edge, a broadly scalloped border softens the geometric composition and reinforces the sense of the shade as a living, organic form.

Curator's Notes
Though by and large a "geometric" lamp, the highly organic elements of this table lamp are what have lent it its name. With the suggestion of spider legs reaching downward over the geometric lines, the lamp shade can be read as a spider's web, backlit by the the verdure of foliage.
