Van Cleef & Arpels Malachite and Diamond Virgo Zodiac Pendant
$35,000
Created in the 1970s in Paris, this large Van Cleef & Arpels pendant is composed of 18K gold, malachite and diamond. The pendant is designed as a malachite disk within a rope twist frame surmounted by a sculptural figure of Virgo trailing floating gowns and holding her harp between two stars, one centering a diamond, the reverse with two stars. One of a beloved series of Van Cleef & Arpels astrological jewels, this Virgo pendant of striking patterned color and bold design expresses the free style and open spirit of the 1970s.

Astrological motifs entered the Van Cleef & Arpels design tradition in 1953 in the form of a diminutive charm with Gemini set among two sapphire stars. The 1970s saw the launch of a full collection of pendants depicting the twelve astrological signs, available in a dozen different hardstones, including lapis, tiger's eye and blue quartz, as well as malachite. These iconic period VCA pendants are increasingly difficult to find.
