Tiffany Studios New York "Counter Balance" Damascene Favrile Glass Lamp

$19,500

Composed of a damascene favrile domed shade and patinated bronze “Counter Balance” or “Balanced-Weight” base, this Tiffany desk lamp dates from circa 1904. The dichroic green and amber damascene patterned shade is suspended from slender double arms, counterweighted by an orb, hinged at an adjustable balance, and raised on a tapering baluster form stand, its patinated bronze base with subtle green and red tones throughout. This versatile lamp is brilliant for adjustable, directional lighting, while its parabolic lines and the intense wave patterning of the shade provide arresting visual interest, whether illuminated from within or without.

A subtle aspect of Tiffany’s glass practice was the optical ribbing patterns that artisans added to the favrile glass shades during the blowing process. These lines run at an oblique angle to the damascene waves, providing greater depth and fascination to the rich patterning.
