Tiffany Studios New York "Cornflower" Picture Frame

$9,500
This arresting picture frame crafted by Tiffany Studios New York features a translucent green glass background adorned with a patinated bronze "Cornflower" pattern. The Cornflower was a staple of European rural life, with stalks of flowers growing amongst wheat and corn fields. In the Middle Ages, young village girls wore wreaths of cornflowers to show that they were eligible to marry. The frame edge is decorated with an elegant bronze bead trim.

It is important to remember when considering the incredible care that Louis Comfort Tiffany employed when creating the composition and technical aspect of this picture frame was the excitement around early photography that was culminating at the time. Though still expensive and reserved largely for the elite, the advent of the Kodak "Brownie" in 1900 made higher-quality photography more accessible then ever before, and ignited a craze for having photographs in the home.
