So-called "Keeper" rings derive from 18th century models. These bands were originally worn in pairs secure a more valuable, gem-set ring and prevent it from slipping from a gloved hand. In the late 19th century, when betrothal and wedding ring forms varied widely, these gold "keeper" rings were revived and re-designed with an intertwined braid motif to enhance their romantic significance. Long popular, they were traditionally exchanged to commemorate betrothal.
