Demantoid garnets—so-called for their adamantine brilliance—were first discovered in Russia’s Ural mountains in 1868. Typically petite but vividly colored, demantoids became a signature gem of the house of Fabergé, and a favorite stone for the pavé setting of diminutive Edwardian animal and insect brooches.
