Marcus & Co. Double Peridot and Diamond Ring

SOLD
$19,500

This distinctive two-stone peridot ring epitomizes Marcus & Co.’s liberal interpretation of Renaissance jewelry forms, fluidly merged with the Art Nouveau aesthetic, of which the firm was a leading American proponent. The flowing gold form, masterfully textured with Marcus’s unmistakable style of chasing and engraving, is adorned with diamonds and enhanced with vibrant green enamel over a prepared ground that offers subtle shading and depth of color. The green basse-taille enamel continues around the shank, which is punctuated at the reverse by a diamond.

Considered to be of the world's oldest gems, peridot was discovered circa 1500 B.C., when records show that the first stones were found on Topazo Island (now known as St. John's) in the Egyptian Red Sea. According to legend, the island inhabitants at the time were forced to collect the brilliantly green peridot stones for the Pharaoh's treasure.
