Tiffany Studios New York "Belted Turtleback" Table Lamp
The "Belted Turtleback" table lamp by Tiffany Studios New York is a refined study in monochromatic expression. Separated into three distinct tiers, the conical lamp shade offers a marriage of subtly opposing forces. The uppermost tier features rectangular panels of mottled green that graduate in size in size as they descend, eventually being interrupted by a band of richly undulating emerald green glass in a horizontal orientation. The lowermost tier features regularly sized rectangular panels, but in this instance in another horizontal orientation. The shade sits upon a patinated bronze "American Indian" base that has raised decorations resembling Indian beadwork.

The strict geometric patterning in this lamp creates a structured harmony that is enliven by the interruption of the wonderfully organic turtleback tiles. With their undulating color and form, the naturalistic nature of the tiles, when juxtaposed with the smooth, near uniform tiles on the upper and lower most shade portions, brings to mind a raw gemstone situated next to a polished gem.
