In the 19th century, red garnets were often referred to as “carbuncles”, traditionally one of the four precious stones said to have been granted to King Solomon by God. A favorite gem of the European nobility and clergy from the Middle Ages, the mines of Bohemia were the pre-eminent source of the world’s most vivid red stones until exhausted in the 1800s.
