French Retro Star-Set Diamond Ring
$6,500
This Retro 18K gold and diamond ring was made in France in the 1940s. The bombé form is designed as central arched top set with a line of diamonds bordered by star-set diamonds, flanked by shoulders with five arched steps. This charming French ring uses old diamonds and gold’s capacity to convey sculptural volume to make playful references to modernist architecture and celestial sparkle.

The 1937 International Exposition of Arts & Techniques in Modern Life signaled the end of the Art Deco with its rich, exotic materials and elevation of ornament. Eventually the new aesthetic translated into Retro jewelry, a populist style that celebrated a sense of monumentality, the sweep of curvilinear forms, and the minimalism of plain polished surfaces.
