Tahitian pearls are only cultivated in the islands of French Polynesia, a group of five archipelagos of 121 islands and atolls, many uninhabited, in the South Pacific. Paul Gaugin, the Post-Impressionist French artist, depicted the people and palm fringed landscapes of the region.
